Why Kempenfelt Bay School?

Discover KBS: Our Mission, vision & Values

Learning that lasts a lifetime

Since 1999, Kempenfelt Bay School has grown from a vision and six students to Simcoe County’s premier independent school. We provide an exemplary education that empowers students to embrace their personal journey as productive, responsible, and compassionate global citizens.

At KBS, our teaching philosophy is based on a simple premise: every student is different. We don’t believe in putting limits on what a child can achieve.

We believe the best way to help students achieve academic excellence is to help them thrive as human beings. We provide a higher standard of education, blending rigorous academics with a nurturing environment, dedicated educators, and a vibrant community.

Learning that Lasts a Lifetime

We honour that partnership by providing a balanced, future-ready experience where high expectations meet the unwavering support kids need to grow through:

High Academic Standards

We set the bar. Everything we do, from our specialized subject teachers to our integrated curriculum, is designed to help students stretch, explore, and expand their capabilities.

A Nurturing Growth Mindset

We don’t push our students. They learn to push themselves. Our mission is to empower them. Grounded in our school motto, "I Can, I Will", KBS students learn how to take intellectual risks, embrace challenges, and safely fail forward.

 An Enduring Love of Learning

Curiosity is our favourite subject. We don’t teach students what to think. We teach them how to think. By rewarding effort and sparking curiosity from the earliest grades onward, we ensure that the pursuit of knowledge remains rewarding, adventurous, and fun.

Whole-Child Well-Being

Where confidence and character matter just as much as curriculum. Sharp minds require big hearts and balanced lives. We prioritize wellness, self-reliance, and character development, ensuring our students feel safe and seen.

Five Things a Visit to KBS Will Teach You

KBS promises a reliable and thoughtful education, infused with meaningful experiences and influenced by relationships. When we think about school, or reflect on our own school experience, we quickly realize that while the academic program was the cornerstone, the culture of the school, the feeling it gave us each day, and the relationships we built resonate deeply and are not soon forgotten. For those who know KBS, no cultural description is required. For those who do not yet know us, no description without a visit will suffice.

Education is human, not mechanical, and our relationships with each other both sustain us and enable our growth. To feel that we are known and understood matters to us, and relationships provide the foundation for this knowledge and understanding. Relationships enabling a belief of "I Can, I Will" are at the heart of our approach at KBS.

Nothing is more important than the people with whom a learner engages. At the heart of building relationships is the research-based understanding that students “learn” their teachers before they can fully learn the material. The most important work we can do at KBS on behalf of our students is introducing the very best educators to their world.

What a school aspires to be needs to be at the core of their decisions. Decisions relating to people, program, resources, and desired outcomes must all spring from the mission; the reason the school exists. At KBS, our mission to provide an exemplary education that empowers students to embrace their personal potential as productive and responsible, global citizens, is the touchstone for the collective experience we provide.

The culmination of mission-driven decisions, school culture, relationships, and top educators create this outcome. Thoughtful and intentional teaching and learning is the sum of these parts and provides any KBS student a robust and meaningful school experience. We invite you to visit us and experience these realities firsthand. In fact, no matter where your school search takes you, look for these foundations, as they will guide you toward the future your child deserves.

KBS Definition of Excellence in Teaching

Excellence in teaching and learning is sustained by innovation that follows from experimentation and is fuelled by inspiration, new ideas, and exposure to communities of learning. Kempenfelt Bay School is this type of community.

Excellence in teaching and learning at Kempenfelt Bay School (KBS) is a collaborative and reflective learning process. Our teachers and students share in a culture of achievement and wellness that promotes inquiry, innovation, and global mindedness. It involves making real-world connections with the students. It leads to the establishment of future ready competencies which include entrepreneurship, creativity, communication, critical thinking, and problem solving while also embedding the KBS 4 Cs of Competence, Confidence, Character, and Community.

Excellent teaching is not linear, but responsive, and can be recursive and flexible. It recognizes that traditional strategies such as direct teaching and the practice and mastery of literacy and numeracy skills still play a role in order for inquiry to be successful. It requires a balance of agency and supported guidance. Excellence in teaching is demonstrated at KBS utilizing an evolving range of pedagogical models rooted in best practices, directly tailored to the subject area, supported by professional development, and enabling teachers to leverage their expertise. Excellence in teaching and learning occurs at KBS because teachers are innovative and continually learn alongside their students.

The 4 Cs at Kempenfelt Bay School

Our values are at the heart of everything we do. At KBS, our 4 Cs: Competence, Confidence, Character, and Community are the cornerstones of our goal setting, daily learning, and future-ready competencies.

You will see this commitment in action on our report cards, where our learning skills assessment directly maps to the future-ready competencies of our 4 Cs. This framework empowers our educators to actively advance and reflect on the vital skills we know students need to thrive.

Where kids learn how to think, not what to think.

We set the bar high for academic standards. Because our teaching philosophy recognizes that every student learns differently, we reject a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, our world-class educators use intentional differentiation, small-group collaboration, and shared team-teaching models to help our students grow.

We develop competence by:

  • Responsive Learning Support: Constantly monitoring progress and adapting teaching methods to align with diverse learning styles.
  • Foundational & Future-Ready Excellence: Achieving measurable success in core subjects like Language and Math by pairing direct teaching with innovative, real-world problem-solving.
  • Exceptional Faculty: Employing and retaining educators who play to their distinct subject expertise and learn alongside their students.
  • Immersive French Instruction: Delivering a premier French as a Second Language program from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8, with a Reach Ahead Credit in Grade 9 French.
Strategic Class Sizes: Intentionally managing class dynamics and group numbers to ensure robust peer collaboration, vibrant discussions, and deep engagement.

Intentional by Design

At KBS, class sizes aren’t just about fewer desks, they are about deeper connections. When a classroom is intentionally sized, education becomes personal. Here is what that looks like every day:

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in Action

We don't just adjust on the fly; we design our environment for everyone from the start. This builds choices and tools directly into the daily routine, letting students dive deeper or find different ways to master a concept.

Nowhere to Hide, Everywhere to Grow

In a large class, quiet students can easily blend into the background. At KBS, every student is seen, heard, and called upon. This constant engagement builds confidence and public speaking skills from an early age.

Real-Time Course Corrections

Our teachers don't wait for report cards to notice a gap in understanding. Feedback is instant and continuous, allowing us to pivot our teaching strategies as needed.

Mentorship

Because our educators know your child’s unique personality, strengths, and areas for growth, they can push them out of their comfort zones, fostering resilience alongside academic excellence.

The Result? Students at KBS don’t just memorize; they master. They develop the 4 Cs, participate more, and build the self-assurance that comes from knowing their voice matters.

Through a broad-based educational program, enriching classroom experiences, guest speakers, field trips, leadership opportunities, community service, and authentic real-world connections, students are encouraged to explore new perspectives, embrace challenges, and develop a strong sense of agency. In a stimulating, supportive learning environment, they learn not only to achieve academic excellence but also to become compassionate, responsible citizens who are ready to shape the future with curiosity, integrity, and purpose.

At KBS, we are dedicated to providing a well-rounded education that nurtures lifelong learners and future-ready leaders. Every experience is intentionally designed to inspire action, foster innovation, and empower students to discover that they can make a meaningful difference in the world, both today and for years to come.

Leadership in Action Growing Purposeful Leaders

Our Global Citizens Approach continues to evolve throughout the Middle School years as students move from learning about leadership to living it. The Leadership in Action program empowers students to develop the confidence, character, and skills to lead with purpose, serve their community, and make a meaningful difference.

Grade 6

Building the Foundation: Students explore the qualities of responsible citizenship, reflecting on their values, actions, and the positive impact they can have within their school and beyond.

Grade 7

Discovering Their Leadership Potential: Students investigate effective leadership, collaboration, and team building while developing practical life skills. They prepare their first résumé and cover letter as they apply for authentic student leadership opportunities within the KBS community.

Grade 8

Leading Through Action: Students transform their learning into meaningful impact. Guided by a teacher mentor, each student designs, plans, and implements an independent, passion-driven community project that addresses a real need or cause. At the conclusion of the year, students share their journey, learning, and impact with the school community.

A Meaningful Achievement

The Leadership in Action journey culminates in a distinguished recognition of each student’s growth and commitment to service. Graduating Grade 8 students who have completed at least two years in the KBS Middle School, documented a minimum of 30 hours of community service, and successfully completed their independent community project earn the KBS Leadership in Action Certificate.

This milestone celebrates students who have demonstrated the competence, confidence, character, and commitment to become compassionate, responsible, and future-ready leaders.
